Title :
The Role of Social Appearing Anxiety, Body Mass and Stress Gender in Eating Behaviors of Adolescent Girls
-
Abstract :
Background and Aim: Eating disorders are common psychiatric disorders that cause many problems in physical and mental health, and individuals functions. Therefore, the study aimed to determine the role of social appearance anxiety, body mass and gender role stress in eating behaviors of adolescent girls.
Materials and Methods: this research design is descriptive -correlational. All female high school students in Rasht city in the educational year of 1998-97 compromised the statistical population. A sample of 264 people was selected by random cluster sampling. To collect information, the social appearance anxiety questionnaire (Hart, Flora et al., 2008), female gender role stress (Gilspy and Isler, 1992) and Nutrition Attitude Questionnaire (Garner and Garfinkel, 1982) was used. To measure body mass index, the length was measured by meter and weight was measured by digital scale. Data were analyzed via Pearson correlation, multiple regression tests.
Results: The results showed that social appearance anxiety and body mass index correlated positively with total score of eating disorder and all its components. While, the female gender role stress has not any correlation with the components of eating disorder as well as the overall score of eating disorder Regression analysis showed that 18% of total variance of feeding habits, 13% of total variance of desire, 10% of total variance of oral control and 14% of total variance of total eating disorder are explained by social appearance anxiety and body mass.
Conclusions: These results indicate that social appearance anxiety and body mass index can be an important factor in predicting eating disorder in girls.
