Title :
Comparison of dark personality traits, negative and positive urgency, in students with and without Behavioral addictions
-
Abstract :
The aim of this study was to compare the dark traits of personality and positive and negative urgency in students with and without addictive behaviors. The design of this descriptive study was causal-comparative. Participants in the study were 143 students with high addictive behaviors, 311 students with moderate addictive behaviors and 272 students without addictive behaviors who were selected from 726 students in the University of Guilan in the academic years of 2019-2020. To collect the data the Cell-Phone Over-Use Scale, the Yale Food Addiction Scale, the Compulsive Buying Scale, Dark triad Dirty Dozen scale, and The (UPPS) Impulsive Behavior Scale were used. Research data were analyzed through multivariate analysis of variance. The results showed that students with high and moderate addictive behaviors have higher dark personality traits (psychopathy, Machiavellianism and narcissism) and higher positive and negative urgency than students without addictive behaviors. These findings suggest that dark personality traits and positive and negative urgency play a role in the possible formation and exacerbation of a variety of addictive behaviors. These results have important implications for the use of therapeutic and educational interventions to treat people with addictive behaviors.
